What Flagyl is and what it is used for?
The name of this medicine is Flagyl 400mg Tablets (called Flagyl in this leaflet). Flagyl contains a medicine called metronidazole. This belongs to a group of medicines called antibiotics.
It works by killing bacteria and parasites that cause infections in your body.

Before you take Flagyl
Do not take this medicine and tell your doctor if: Known hypersensitivity to metronidazole.
Check with your doctor before taking this medicine if: Regular clinical and laboratory monitoring are advised if administration of Flagyl for more than 10 days is considered to be necessary. Metronidazole should be administered with caution to patients with hepatic encephalopathy. Caution is advised in patients with active disease of the central nervous system other than brain abscess. The consumption of alcohol during metronidazole therapy should be avoided since there could be a disulfiram-like reaction.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding:
There is inadequate evidence of the safety of metronidazole in pregnancy. Metronidazole is excreted in milk and no adverse effects in the newborn have been reported. Flagyl should therefore be given during pregnancy or during lactation only when the physicians consider it essential.
How to take Flagyl?
Flagyl tablets may be taken twice a day. Swallow the tablets whole with a full glass of water or other liquid or take them with food.

Flagyl tablets should be swallowed with water (not chewed). It is recommended that the tablets be taken during or after a meal. Before taking the suspension, the bottle should be shaken before use.

For prophylaxis and treatment of anaerobic infections:
Adults: 100 ml (500 mg) immediately before, during or after operation, repeated 8 hourly
Children: 1.5 ml (7.5 mg) per kg body weight every 8 hours
Duration: Treatment for 7 days should be satisfactory for most patients but depending on clinical and bacteriological assessments, the physician may decide to prolong the treatment
If you take more Flagyl then you should
There is no specific antidote for metronidazole overdosages. In case of suspected massive overdosages, a symptomatic and supportive treatment should be instituted.
If you forget to take Flagyl
Please take that dose as soon as you remember and then continue to take your course of antibiotics as normal. But if it's almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule.
If you stop taking Flagyl
Finish the entire course of treatment, even if you are feeling better, or else you risk a relapse. Worse, by not finishing, you might contribute to the dangerous rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Possible side effects:
Epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, peripheral sensory neuropathy, headache, angioedema, agranulocytosis, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, confusion, hallucinations, rashes, darkening of urine may be observed during treatment.
How to store Flagyl (Storage condition)?
Store below 30℃.Keep protected from light. Keep medicines out of the reach of children. Do not use later than the date of expiry.
